R.E. Sheahan Talks Book Covers

Dan Long, at the time a new neighbor of mine, created the awesome cover after a few talks with me about my story and what I envisioned. He is talented and amazing, integrating subtle references from Storm of Arranon into the cover—like the dagger, the globe, the purple ball of energy, and the glowing eyes of the maejen (wolves). My protagonist, Erynn’s eyes needed to stand out, and I appreciate how he portrayed her. I fell in love with the cover the minute I saw it. It was Erynn, Arranon, and the Storm.

The how is—I lived on a cattle and sheep ranch in a tiny town between Medford and Crater Lake in Oregon. My acquaintance with Dan Long began when the new owners of the place above mine needed help putting in a gate across their road. So I took my Cat Skid Steer with the post hole digger attachment and helped them with their gate.

Good people.

Not long after this, I found out Dan was a retired Hollywood illustrator who’d worked on movies like Alien, Predator, Back Draft, and several others.

Still occupied with formatting, title, interior design, editing, and proof reading, I hadn’t really thought about the cover design yet. That’s when Dan volunteered to create my cover! His only request was when the book is made into a movie, he be allowed to do all the illustrations. Done! I’m sure with his glowing reputation, that won’t be a problem.

About the Author

I have always been a reader. I love books. When I’m not able to read, I listen to audio books. I started writing while working as a Paramedic/Firefighter in Northern California. Trust me, it’s not like it appears on TV. There was plenty of time for books, mostly reading them. I didn't seriously start writing until I moved to my ranch in Oregon. While waiting for lambs to be born in the middle of the night, I would head back to the house for an hour or two and sit down at the computer. Before I knew it, I had a manuscript. Not a good one, but a start.I joined critique groups and attended writer's conferences. I was on the fast track to learning.

In 2013, I received an honorable mention in Writer’s Digest’s Self Published book awards for MG/YA. I guess I am learning something!

Ideas from dreams follow me into warm sunny days or the quiet of falling snow. “What ifs” feed a vivid imagination. Even mistyped phrases may lead to an "aha" moment. Brain storming sessions standing in windy, dark parking lots with fellow writers release thoughts that pry at the corners of my mind, grasping for purchase. Sometimes the ideas pursue me, with persistence.
