S.P. Aruna Talks Book Covers

The cover design of Healing, the first book of the Girl Within Girl series, sums up the plight of our heroine, who is suffering from a condition known as Dissociative Identity Disorder, or what we laypeople call multiple personalities. In this first book, there are three main characters that inhabit the same body: Katrina, whom psychologists might call the "host personality," a somewhat shy, reserved
nurse at a psychiatric hospital; Cherry, the uninhibited globetrotting photojournalist; and Anisa, the cold, calculating spy/assassin. So I wanted to convey this sense of division within a person on the cover of the book to best sum up what the story is about; a sort of "what you see is what you get attitude."

I worked with a guy called Cal Sharp of Caligraphics, and we came up with a design that visually evokes the concept of ghost-like alter egos emanating from a central character. This concept came easily to my mind given the general plot. However, the trick was to find the same model in different poses that would be adaptable to expressing this idea. At first we thought we could get around this by using only one photo with some sort of mirror effect but luckily, while searching the site https://stock.adobe.com/, we did find one model in two different poses that would work. I also liked the fact that in both poses, we don't see her face, adding even more mystery to the final image.

The same model, in two different poses that fit well in a composite image was the key. It was pure luck to find her!
